The Free Science Institute of Finland is a scientific research institute established and run by independent researchers. The institute is guided by the principle of academic freedom, including the possibility to choose research topics, methods and publication channels freely without strategic guidance from universities, private companies or the state.

The institute values the silence, freedom, slow science and community spirit required by basic research that is not aimed at profit and benefit. The institute will initially operate as a research residence and event organizer, with the goal of expanding into an independent center for free, top-level research similar to the IAS (Institute for Advanced Studies) institutes.

The institute’s events are organized in Pyhtää (approximately 110 kilometers east of Helsinki), in the culturally and historically significant Stockfors factory area. The institute also organizes events elsewhere in Finland.
